GSMC News – FREE PROSTATE SCREENINGS JUNE 24 & 25

Good Shepherd Medical Center Provides
Free Prostate Screenings June 24 and 25

Prostate cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in men. Good Shepherd Medical Center will provide free prostate screenings on Wednesday, June 24 and Thursday, June 25 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Medical Plaza III.

Men of all ages are at risk to develop this type of cancer, although it is most often found in men over age 50. African-American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer are at an even higher risk. These men should begin testing as early as age 45.

Each year, Good Shepherd screens members of the local community who may be at risk for prostate cancer. Patients who indicate warning signs are referred to their doctors for further evaluation.

Gina Terry, RN and Community Educator said, “Through these screenings, we have had gentlemen that were diagnosed early and were able to treat their cancer in its earliest, most curable stage. When prostate cancer is detected early on, chances of complete recovery are better.”

The screenings this year will take place in the hallway of Medical Plaza III. Good Shepherd sponsors a local chapter of Us, Too! International, a support group for prostate cancer survivors. The group meets the fourth Tuesday of odd months, from 7 to 8 p.m. on the fifth floor of Medical Plaza I.
