Browser Settings
  • General
    • What is a browser?

      • A browser is a piece of software that allows you to view webpages. Examples of Internet browsers are Internet Explorer, Firefox and Netscape Navigator. The Good Shepherd website was designed for use with later versions of Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator in mind, though most other browsers should work as well. Contact the webmaster@gsmc.org with questions.

      What’s a browser setting?

      • A browser setting is a control within your Internet browser software that affects the way you see websites, use web services, etc. There are many browser settings available within your Internet browser software.
  • Setting your Home page
    • Would you like to bring up the same page each time you connect to the internet? Set the page as your homepage to make things easier.

      • Internet Explorer
        • Open your Internet browser.
        • Select Tools from the top bar menu
        • Select Internet Options.
        • Under the Home Page section, enter the web address of your favorite website, or if you are currently on your favorite website, click the Use Current button.
        • Click Ok.
          You’re done! From now on, when you open your browser, or whenever you click on the Home button, your favorite website will display first.
      • Netscape Navigator
        • Open Netscape Navigator
        • Select Edit from the top bar menu.
        • Select Preferences.
        • Under the Navigator: Home Page section, enter the address of your favorite website.
        • Click Ok.
          You’re done! From now on, when you open your browser, or whenever you click on the Home button, your favorite website will display first.
      • Firefox
        • Open Firefox
        • Select Tools from the top bar menu.
        • Select Options.
        • Under the General: Home Page section, enter the address of your favorite website.
        • Click OK.
          You’re done! From now on, when you open your browser, or whenever you click on the Home button, your favorite website will display first.
  • Changing your Text Size
    • Do you have trouble reading all the words on a webpage? Changing the text size can make a big difference in how easy a webpage can be to read.

      • Internet Explorer
        • Open your internet browser.
        • Select View from the top bar menu.
        • Under Text Size, choose whether you would like to make the default text size on webpages viewed larger or smaller.
          Note: This will only affect webpages whose text is set to the default size.  For those that have a specified size, this setting will not affect them.
      • Netscape Navigator
        • Open your internet browser.
        • Select View from the top bar menu.
        • Under Text Zoom, choose whether you would like to make the default text size on webpages viewed larger or smaller by selecting a percentage (less than 100% shrinks text, larger makes text grow).
          Note: This will only affect webpages whose text is set to the default size.  For those that have a specified size, this setting will not affect them.
      • Firefox
        • Open your internet browser.
        • Select View from the top bar menu.
        • Under Text Size, choose whether you would like to make the default text size on webpages viewed larger or smaller.

  • Java Enabled
    • In order to properly use the Good Shepherd website main menu and other important features, Java must be enabled. Look below for more information on making Java enabled on your internet browser.

      • Internet Explorer
        • Choose Tools from the top menu bar.
        • Select Internet Options.
        • Click the Security tab.
        • Click button for Custom Level.
        • Scroll down to Scripting: Scripting of Java Applets.
        • Click Enable.
        • Click OK to save the changes.
        • Click OK again to save and return to Internet Explorer.
        • Close and restart Internet Explorer. You must restart Internet Explorer in order for the changes to load properly.
      • Netscape Navigator
        • Choose Edit from the top menu bar.
        • Select Preferences.
        • Select the Advanced category.
        • Select the checkbox for Enable Java.
        • Click OK save and return to Netscape Navigator.
        • Close and restart Netscape Navigator. You must restart Netscape Navigator in order for the changes to load properly.
      • Firefox
        • Choose Tools from the top menu bar.
        • Select Options.
        • Under the Web Features category, make sure Enable Java is checked.
        • Click OK to save and return to Firefox.
        • Close and restart Firefox. You must restart Firefox in order for the changes to load properly.
  • Javascript enabled
    • In order to properly use Good Shepherd website forms and other important features, Javascript must be enabled. Look below for more information on making Javascript enabled on your internet browser.

      • Internet Explorer
        • Choose Tools from the top menu bar.
        • Select Internet Options.
        • Click the Security tab.
        • Click the button for Custom Level.
        • Scroll down to the Scripting: Active Scripting.
        • Click Enable.
        • Click OK to save the changes.
        • Click OK again to save and return to Internet Explorer.
        • Close and restart Internet Explorer. You must restart Internet Explorer in order for the changes to load properly.
      • Netscape Navigator
        • Choose Edit from the top menu bar.
        • Select the item Preferences.
        • Expand the Advanced category. 
          Select the sub-category Scripts & Plug-ins.
        • In the area labeled Enable Javascript for, make sure the checkbox next to Navigator is checked. 
        • Make sure all boxes in the Allow scripts to: area are checked.
        • Click OK to save and return to Netscape Navigator.
        • Close and restart Netscape Navigator. You must restart Netscape Navigator in order for the changes to load properly.
      • Firefox
        • Choose Tools from the top menu bar.
        • Select Options.
        • Under the Web Features category, make sure Enable Javascript is checked.
        • Click OK to save and return to Firefox.
        • Close and restart Firefox. You must restart Firefox in order for the changes to load properly.
  • Cookies enabled
    • In order to properly use secure areas  of the Good Shepherd website, Cookies must be enabled. Look below for more information on making Cookies enabled on your internet browser.
      • Internet Explorer
        • Choose Tools from the top menu bar.
        • Select Internet Options.
        • Click the Privacy tab.
        • Click the Advanced button.
        • Check the box labeled Override automatic cookie handling.
        • Choose the Accept radio button beneath First-party Cookies.
        • Choose the Prompt radio button beneath Third-party Cookies.
        • Check the Override automatic cookie handling box.
        • Check the box labeled Always allow session cookies.
        • Click OK to save the changes.
        • Click OK again to save and return to Internet Explorer.
        • Close and restart Internet Explorer.  You must restart Internet Explorer in order for the changes to load properly.
      • Netscape Navigator
        • Choose Edit from the top menu bar.
        • Select Preferences.
        • Expand the Privacy & Security category. 
          Select the sub-category Cookies.
        • Select the radio button for Enable cookies based on privacy settings.
        • Click the View button.
        • In the Level of Privacy area select the medium button.
        • Click OK to save this change.
        • Click OK again to save and return to Netscape Navigator.
        • Close and restart Netscape Navigator. You must restart Netscape Navigator in order for the changes to load properly.
      • Firefox
        • Choose Tools from the top menu bar.
        • Select Options.
        • Under the Privacy category, expand the Cookies section.
        • Make sure the Allow sites to set cookies box is checked.
        • Click OK to save and return to Firefox.
        • Close and restart Firefox. You must restart Firefox in order for the changes to load properly.
Screen Resolution
  • Setting Your Screen Resolution
    • This website is best viewed with a screen resolution of 800×600. Sizing your screen resolution to a lower setting can make webpages appear bigger, and may be more convenient for those with poor eyesight.

      • Right-click on your desktop.
      • Select Properties from the menu.
      • Go to the Settings tab.
      • Under the Screen Resolution area, move the dial to the right or left until it’s set to 800 x 600 pixels.
      • Click Apply. The screen may go black while the setting is being applied, but should readjust momentarily.
      • If the screen is to your liking, click OK to keep these settings, or Cancel to revert.
      • Click OK to close the Properties dialog box.
Additional Software
  • Flash
    • Certain areas of the Good Shepherd website use Flash technology for things like menus, movies and other interactive tools.  To install a Flash player into your internet browser, follow the directions below.
      • Go to the Adobe Flash Player website.
      • Under Adobe Flash Player, click Download now.
      • On the install page, make sure the Yahoo Toolbar option is not filled in, and click the Install Now button.
      • The download manager will ask you if you would like to open or save the file. Save the file to your Desktop.
      • If the Security Warning appears on your page, follow the instructions on the Adobe site to Allow an ActiveX control to be installed.
      • Click Install when the Do you want to install this software? window pops up.
      • When complete, you should see an animation play on the Adobe page, notifying you that the Flash player has been installed successfully.
      • Close and restart your browser for the changes to load properly.
  • Acrobat (pdf) Reader
    • Certain areas of the Good Shepherd website use documents called pdf’s (Portable Document Format) to display information like fliers, announcements, and forms. To install a Adobe Reader onto your computer, follow the directions below.
      • Go to the Adobe Reader website.
      • On the install page, make sure the Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition option is not filled in, and click the download button.
      • Click Run when the Do you want to run or save this file? window pops up.
      • The Adobe Install Manager will guide you through the rest of the installation process.
      • Close and restart your browser for the changes to load properly.
  • Viewing Excel (xls) documents
    • Certain areas of the Good Shepherd website use spreadsheet documents (made with Microsoft Excel, .xls) to display information. To install an Excel document viewer onto your computer, follow the directions below.
      • If you do not already have Microsoft Excel on your computer, go to the OpenOffice.org website to download a free, open-source solution that will open any Office document.
      • Click Download OpenOffice.org
      • Choose your operating system (Windows , Linux, etc.) by clicking on its link.
      • Click the Continue to Download button.
      • Click Run when the Do you want to run or save this file? window pops up.
      • The Windows Installer will guide you through the rest of the installation process.
  • Viewing Word (doc) documents
    • Certain areas of the Good Shepherd website use documents in Microsoft Word format (.doc) to display information like fliers, announcements, and letters. To install a Word document viewer onto your computer, follow the directions below.
      • If you do not already have Microsoft Word on your computer, go to the OpenOffice.org website to download a free, open-source solution that will open any Office document.
      • Click Download OpenOffice.org
      • Choose your operating system (Windows , Linux, etc.) by clicking on its link.
      • Click the Continue to Download button.
      • Click Run when the Do you want to run or save this file? window pops up.

  • Viewing PowerPoint (pps) documents
    • Certain areas of the Good Shepherd website use PowerPoint presentations (.pps and .ppt) to display slideshows and training guides. To install a PowerPoint slideshwo viewer onto your computer, follow the directions below.
      • If you do not already have Microsoft PowerPoint on your computer, go to the OpenOffice.org website to download a free, open-source solution that will open any Office document.
      • Click Download OpenOffice.org
      • Choose your operating system (Windows , Linux, etc.) by clicking on its link.
      • Click the Continue to Download button.
      • Click Run when the Do you want to run or save this file? window pops up.
      • The Windows Installer will guide you through the rest of the installation process.
  • Windows Media Player (mpg, wmv)
      • Go to the Microsoft Windows Media Player website.
      • Click the Download Now button.
      • When the Do you want to run or save this file? window pops up, click the Run button.
      • Windows Installer will guide you through the rest of the installation process.
