As we look to the future, we see the need to have a facility that utilizes the science of helping people maintain and improve their health. Tomorrow’s healthcare must look beyond treating the sick. The vision of this journey is to build upon Good Shepherd’s long-standing tradition of providing nationally recognized quality healthcare by investing in a state-of-the-art facility for healthy living.
Good Shepherd’s Institute for Healthy Living offers the community two paths of wellness. The facility provides advanced outpatient rehabilitative services for individuals requiring a medically-guided continuum of care. The second path provides individuals and area employers the ability to improve and maintain their health through a comprehensive fitness and wellness facility. The facility encompasses 75,000 square feet of specially designed space for the delivery of medical, educational and fitness programs.
- Technologically advanced rehabilitation facilities provide professional clinical staff with the tools and resources to aid an individual’s successful recovery and recuperation.
- Aquatic fitness and therapies utilize an Olympic-length 5-lane lap pool designed with a zero step entrance ramp, water resistance “river walk,” and a cold water therapeutic immersion pool.
- Individuals utilizing cardiac rehabilitation services are provided with a dedicated area to lead them through their recovery plan. From specialized equipment to a dedicated indoor walking track, the Institute continues Good Shepherd’s advancement in cardiac care.
- Health-related instruction is crucial to improving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The Institute includes a unique educational environment where forums and classes on a variety of health-related topics are presented. From diabetes education to better nutrition to smoking cessation, the facility provides the community with the region’s largest amount of classroom space dedicated to health-related instruction.
- Specialized exercise space accents the holistic approach to wellness. From a multi-exercise bike “spinning room” to rooms dedicated to mind and body for yoga and Pilates to the enjoyment of a fully equipped basketball court, individuals have access to a broad selection of exercise choices.
- Good Shepherd’s Institute for Healthy Living is designed around the architectural principles of sustainable design reflecting the importance of the available resources in the environment. The facility has sought certification under LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) as a green building, making it the first in the region to achieve this status.
Positive Economic Impact
Throughout our history, the community’s local businesses and organizations have joined Good Shepherd’s vision of improving healthcare by joining the Foundation in major capital projects. The scope of benefits this facility brings to the community includes the improvement of individual health and exceptional resources for area employers to provide a healthier lifestyle for their employees.
Statistics prove that healthier employees lead to a healthier business. And healthy businesses have a positive impact on the infrastructure of this community. A corporate wellness program can help reduce job absenteeism, which is one of the biggest factors facing businesses. It can also help reduce the number of injuries that occur in the workplace, not just from accidents, but also from repetitive motion and other recurring sources.
Healthy employees cost businesses less money in direct health care costs and indirectly in lost time. Following are some of the key factors affecting employee attendance, productivity and health care costs:
 |
Stress – Nearly one out of 5 workers is at risk for stress related health problems – 3x risk of heart and cardiovascular problems, 2-3x risk of anxiety, back pain, substance abuse, injuries, infections, cancer and obesity.
Obesity – Obesity is a greater trigger for health problems and increased health spending than smoking or drinking.
Inactivity – 40% of U.S. adults get no leisure, physical activity.

Good Shepherd’s Commitment
Good Shepherd has committed $12 million toward the construction of this $17 million facility. Since the cornerstone of this project is improving health in Northeast Texas, the Good Shepherd Foundation has embraced the opportunity to raise the remaining $5 million. With your help, we will meet this goal and celebrate a facility where healthcare and fitness merge.
Sharing the Vision
Good Shepherd is recognized for its commitment to the region it serves. The Institute for Healthy Living is a visible example of Good Shepherd’s reinvestment in the community, providing access to exceptional healthcare services and resources. This facility improves the quality of life for all who enter its doors. The importance of the Institute for Healthy Living extends beyond the boundaries of its walls, and that is why we ask you to share in this vision with the Good Shepherd Foundation in raising $5 million for the construction of this new facility.
