Heart and Vascular Care at Good Shepherd Longview
Focused on heart and vascular care

The faster a heart attack is treated, the less a heart can be damaged. Good Shepherd Medical Center is Longview’s first and only hospital to receive Chest Pain Center Accreditation by the Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC). Good Shepherd has earned Cycle III Chest Pain with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) Accreditation, the highest level of accreditation for Chest Pain Centers.

The SCPC promotes Chest Pain Centers as an operational model for heart attack care, starting from the onset of a patient’s symptoms, and including engagement of emergency dispatch services, emergency medical services and all cardiac units throughout the patient’s stay, and continuing with cardiac rehabilitation after discharge. Good Shepherd’s code STEMI program measures the amount of time in which our team is able to successfully stop a heart attack and exceeds the national guidelines. The Good Shepherd team successfully performs this feat in less than 60 minutes on average, while the national benchmark is 90 minutes.

Each year at Good Shepherd, approximately:

  • 9,000 major cardiac procedures are performed
  • 2,000 catheterizations are performed, surpassing the American College of Cardiology (ACC) minimum performance standard of 400
  • 260 open-heart surgeries are performed, surpassing the ACC minimum volume standard for quality (233)
  • 7,000 medical cardiology procedures are performed in the Cath lab
  • 42,000 non-invasive cardiology services are performed on an inpatient and outpatient basis

Over the past five years, we have invested more than $6 million in technology enhancements, including the addition of electrophysiology equipment to provide care to those patients experiencing abnormal heart rhythms.

Cardiac Rehabilitation

Through our Institute of Healthy Living and Cardiac Rehabilitation, we deliver comprehensive cardiovascular risk reduction services to patients with cardiovascular and peripheral arterial disease. We are certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

Our cardiac rehabilitation teams, which consist of registered nurses, exercise physiologist, registered dietitians and certified diabetic educators, assist patients in developing an exercise program unique to each patient’s needs and abilities. During the regularly scheduled progressive exercise training sessions, each patient’s heart rhythm, heart rate and blood pressure are closely monitored and evaluated.

Individualized lifestyle modification counseling is provided in addition to group education focusing on:

  • Anatomy and physiology of the diseased heart
  • Actions/indications of heart medications
  • Stress management
  • Heart healthy nutrition
  • Smoking cessation
  • Exercise safety

Patient benefits of participation in cardiac rehabilitation:

  • Improved functional capacity
  • Increased knowledge of heart disease
  • Improved adherence to positive lifestyle changes
  • Improved compliance with medical regime
  • Increased self-esteem and confidence
  • Reduced subsequent morbidity and mortality related to cardiovascular disease

Participation in cardiac rehabilitation requires a physician referral and usually is covered by Medicare and most major medical insurance companies.
