High Risk Maternity
The Good Shepherd Perinatology Services
Perinatology, also called maternal fetal medicine, is the field of obstetrics devoted to managing high-risk pregnancies. Good Shepherd established perinatology services to provide individualized care to expectant mothers who may be considered at high risk for adverse maternal, fetal or neonatal outcomes.
Good Shepherd has an antepartum unit for women with high risk pregnancies, to extend the pregnancy when needed for preterm labor, premature rupture of membranes, hypertension in pregnancy and other high risk conditions. We offer a comfortable environment with skilled nurses to meet these special needs.
Our perinatologists will work closely with your obstetrician to develop a care management plan tailored to fit your needs and history. Though you may see a perinatologist several times during your pregnancy, your own obstetrician will continue to manage the pregnancy and will deliver your baby. Perinatologists will also collaborate with other specialists including a pediatric cardiologist who can evaluate a baby’s heart during pregnancy and even perform a fetal echocardiogram in needed. Available services include genetic counseling and testing, Level II ultrasounds and amniocentesis.
