Follow-Up Care for Your Family

Leaving the hospital with a newborn can be disconcerting for first-time or veteran parents. Moms who deliver at Good Shepherd Medical Center have access to resources to ensure a smooth, comfortable and safe transition from hospital to home through its innovative Mother/Baby Home Care programs. Once you take your baby home, Good Shepherd would like to continue to be a resource when you have a concern or question.

In preparation for your return home, we encourage you to have someone available to assist with cooking, cleaning, laundry and caring for other children. Friends and family frequently offer their help and by accepting their offer, you and your baby will benefit.

Good Shepherd Medical Center offers several options for your follow-up care. The programs are staffed by our experienced Maternal/Child staff in order to provide you with the best possible resources.

Lactation Resource Center:
Personal Consultations

The Good Shepherd Women's Center employs registered nurses who are certified by the International Lactation Consultant Association. Nurses with this certification must complete a 2000 hour training program working exclusively with breastfeeding mothers. Mothers can be assured that these nurses have the experience to assist any new mother who wishes to breastfeed her newborn. Our specialists can attend to breastfeeding problems including sore nipples, difficulty with latch-on, low milk supply, engorgement and other situations.

Should you have questions when you return home from the hospital, Good Shepherd offers a telephone number specific for breastfeeding questions at (903) 315-5595. During normal business hours, this line is answered by a Certified Lactation Consultant. If a consultant is unable to answer your call, please leave a message. If you need an immediate response, call Good Shepherd's Healthy Hotline (903) 315-GSHS (4747) or the toll-free 24-hour baby line at (800) 315-5399.

The Good Shepherd Women's Center provides useful resources such as books, educational video tapes, electric breast pumps and other necessary breastfeeding materials. Certified Lactation Consultants also provide individualized instructions on the use of these materials.

Outpatient consultations for breastfeeding are by appointment only. If an appointment is made, a summary report is forwarded to your physician so that he/she can coordinate all healthcare providers and ensure you receive the care you need.

Fees for consultations and equipment are the responsibility of the patient, and may be covered through your insurance company. Good Shepherd patient representatives can provide an estimate of your financial responsibility.
