Residency

Welcome from Program Director:

Thank you for considering Internal Medicine training at the University of Texas Health Science Center/Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview, Texas. Choosing a training program is one of the most important decisions affecting your professional career and personal life. The faculty, staff, and leadership at UTHSC/GSMC and the Longview community are committed to fulfilling your needs and expectations during this formative period in your career.

Why was this program created?

As the only academic health science center in Northeast Texas, the University of Texas Health Science Center-Tyler has sponsored family medicine training since 1985 and an occupational medicine residency since 1994. Therefore, creation of an internal medicine training program continues the institutional tradition of training primary care physicians. In 2010, a partnership was formed with GSMC to establish this new program, which will address the ever increasing shortage of primary care physicians in Texas and nationwide by expanding training opportunities in internal medicine.

What should I consider in choosing a training program?

Your decision in choosing a training program will be based on a number of factors with location, institutional stability, reputation, and culture among the major considerations for most applicants.

  • Choosing a program location is a very personal decision largely based on where you want to settle and if Texas is your likely destination then training at a University of Texas affiliated program in Longview makes good sense. Longview is approximately 118 miles from Dallas and 60 miles from Shreveport, LA.  East Texas is known for its scenic lakes, lush piney woods, sports tourism, renowned golf courses and award winning schools.  Longview offers a moderate cost of living, cultural facilities, and abundant recreational activities. Click here to learn more about Longview and the East Texas region.
  • Both GSMC and UTHSC have served the region for decades and have solid financial foundations, which ensure stability for both institutions. GSMC has a strong history and reputation for providing high quality, compassionate medical care. A full service, acute-care 425-bed regional referral center, GSMC has more than 84,000 annual Emergency Room visits and 18,000 annual inpatient admissions. For more information about our institutions see their respective links.
  • As a new program, the reputation of internal medicine training at GSMC has yet to be established. However, the outstanding track record of other UTHSC training programs and of other training programs within the University of Texas System provide testament to high standards for graduate medical education. These standards provide the benchmark for the reputation you can expect of this program. Training will be provided by a team of experienced and committed clinicians and supportive administrative staff.
  • Program culture reflects the environment and approach to learning, patient care, support, collegiality, and work satisfaction. The culture of this program will be characterized as emphasizing a learner-centered environment that is supportive and collegial. This will translate into high job satisfaction. Moreover, patient care activities will emphasize the principles of patient-centeredness, timeliness, equity, effectiveness, efficiency, and safety as recommended by the Institute of Medicine.

How will this program prepare me for the rapidly changing health care environment?

The fundamental purpose of the internal medicine residency training program is to create a learning environment which promotes the delivery of quality, safe, and patient-centered medical care while also providing the trainee with opportunities for both personal and professional growth as a physician. In addition to learning the traditional competencies of medical knowledge and patient care skills required of physicians, increasingly, physician effectiveness in our complex and evolving healthcare environment also requires high standards of professionalism, and structured learning opportunities in interpersonal and communication skills, performance improvement, and systems-based practice. Learning opportunities for all of these competencies will be integrated throughout the three years of training at UTHSC/GSMC.

I am confident that the learning environment of the UTHSC/GSMC internal medicine training program will provide you with the experience to become an outstanding internist and to be successful in any career path you choose after your internal medicine training.
